Museu Imaginário is the blog of Felipe Ziotti Narita, a Brazilian lecturer and researcher in the social sciences. The title refers to André Malraux’s essay entitled Le musée imaginaire (1947), which was translated into English as Museum without walls, but the French title literally means “The imaginary museum”. Due to the technical conditions of the reproduction of physical objects as images (via photographs, for example), the pervasive presence of art itens led Malraux to argue that “nowadays an art student can examine color reproduction of most of the world’s great paintings”. If the connoisseur had to memorize what he saw in galleries, museums, libraries and archives, as best he could, “we have far more great works available to refresh our memories than those which even the greatest of museums could bring together”. Thus, instead of being limited to physical conditions, the imaginary museum took shape under the aegis of the images within contemporary culture.

In the late 20th century, with the digital condition, this process was dematerialized and collectionism became the ordinary activity of many blogs and virtual archives. Blogs, wikis, videos and podcasts are now an established part of the chattersphere and potential means of public conversation. This blog is part of this story. I do not collect images; I collect texts. And I use digital archives to open up and store the mosaic of memories, paths, and drafts of things that I am writing. In other words, this is an imaginary museum that collects scattered remarks, sketches, commentaries, newspaper articles, critical chronicles, and incomplete notes in the social sciences. Sometimes I have updated it assiduously, sometimes I have been more lackadaisical.

This website assembles academic content for academic and non-academic public and the space is intended for a general audience, which means that I will not publish strict academic works (see my curriculum vitae). As a notepad, I will diffuse some remarks on books and topics as well as articles that contribute to the public debate and liminal transitions among the areas in the humanities and social sciences. This is also a digital laboratory for the incubation of untimely ideas, which somewhat resonate the Nietzschean sense of unzeitgemass, meaning asynchronous observations that try to escavate against the grain the spirit of the times and sediment residual compositions.

This project belongs to my blogging itinerary. My activities have an erratic course. I have been blogging since 2017, when I started owning a web domain. Due to the costs, I decided to cancel it and, as I was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of São Paulo (USP), I started using the campus domain (Stoa USP) to blog. So, I moved the content from my former blog to Stoa USP. However, USP system is abandoned – no technical support and the university is not interested in refreshing the system. Being there, I feel like living in an abandoned facility: I am drifting and using the ruins of the network infrastructure of web 2.0 until they decide to turn it off permanently. Anyway I still use the academic blog on Stoa USP and always exchange my posts from that blog to Museu Imaginário.

The views expressed on this blog are purely my own, except otherwise indicated. The blog publishes content in English and Portuguese and I will publish in Portuguese some translations from English, German, French and Spanish. That being said, you can reach me at felipe.narita [at] unesp [dot] br.

Museu Imaginário é um blog mantido por Felipe Ziotti Narita, professor e pesquisador brasileiro da área de ciências sociais. O título é uma referência a um curioso texto de André Malraux, intitulado Le musée imaginaire (1947), em que o escritor avalia o impacto das condições técnicas de reprodução de objetos físicos como imagens (em fotografias, por exemplo). Graças a esse formato moderno de reprodução cultural, a presença massiva de itens artísticos levou Malraux a considerar que “hoje qualquer estudante dispõe de reproduções coloridas dos maiores pintores do mundo”. Se o especialista tinha que memorizar o que via nas galerias, museus, bibliotecas e arquivos, “nós temos muito mais obras disponíveis para nossa memória do que mesmo os maiores museus poderiam ter”. Então, em vez de limitado às condições físicas, o museu imaginário ganha corpo com a lógica das imagens na cultura contemporânea.

No fim do século XX, sob a condição digital, esse processo foi desmaterializado e o colecionismo se tornou a atividade comum a muitos blogs e arquivos virtuais. Este blog é parte desta história. Eu não coleto propriamente imagens, mas textos. Uso este arquivo digital para descortinar e armazenar um mosaico de memórias e caminhos do pensamento. Em outras palavras, este é um museu imaginário de notas esparsas, esboços, comentários, textos de jornal, notas incompletas e materiais residuais das minhas pesquisas em ciências sociais. Às vezes posto com alguma regularidade, às vezes não.

Este site, então, oferece um apanhado de conteúdo acadêmico para públicos não-acadêmicos, tendo a divulgação científica como um de seus focos. Não publicarei no blog textos acadêmicos (ver currículo). Como uma espécie de caderno de notas, pretendo publicar textos sobre livros e assuntos relativos às humanidades e às ciências sociais, tendo em vista, por exemplo, artigos preocupados com a intervenção no debate público. Trata-se, também, de um laboratório digital em que pretendo incubar algumas ideias extemporâneas, com uma conotação próxima à sugestão nietzschiana da unzeitgemass, entendida como observações assincrônicas que tentam sedimentar algumas composições menores.

Este projeto é parte do meu itinerário pelo blogosfera. Minhas atividades nesse terreno são erráticas. Eu tenho participado da blogosfera desde 2017, quando comprei um domínio. Em função dos custos, resolvi cancelá-lo. Quando comecei o pós-doutorado na USP, comecei a usar o domínio institucional (Stoa USP) como blog. Então, migrei o conteúdo do antigo blog para o Stoa USP. O sistema da USP, contudo, está abandonado, pois não há suporte técnico e a universidade não deve mais atualizá-lo. Lá é como se estivéssemos hospedados em uma instalação abandonada, ficando à deriva para utilizar as ruínas da infraestrutura de rede da web 2.0 até que alguém decida fechar tudo permanentemente ou até que a própria estrutura, em função da obsolescência, fique inutilizável.
